Skyward is now open! I have been working with a wonderful group of students who are on the Postgraduate Museum & Galleries Studies Course at St Andrews University. Together we are putting on this exhibition inspired by Prof James Bell Pettigrew (1832-1908), a medical doctor with a fascination of animal movement and particularly flight. He studied tirelessly and in 1873 he published Animal Locomotion; or Walking, Swimming and Flying. He also wrote Design in Nature in 1908. As part of the exhibition Henry Rae, a technician from the University made a wonderful zoetrope in which I have displayed some illustrations from Design in Nature of a pigeon in flight.
Prof Bell Pettigrew built a flying machine which was petrol powered and had flapping wings (an ornithopter) and at 70 years old flew down Abbey Walk in St Andrews for about 60 feet, before crash landing! He broke his hip.
